Cultural Sensitivity

I decided today that the funnest classes ever are classes on cultural sensitivity (which is apparently the politically correct term for political correctness). This may not be the case once you get out in the real world, but such is totally the case in college. Seriously, though. Today, we had our cultural sensitivity lecture in my Writing in Psychology class, and the whole time, we just watched clips and read cartoons in which people were not being "culturally sensitive," aka mildly racist or rather sexist. None were super blatantly offensive, but all were hilarious. Like the cartoon with the woman and the man sitting in bed reading, and she's reading "Women are from Venus, Men are Idiots." And we watched half an hour of this tv show, "Murphy Brown" (a show about newscasters, basically), where they struggled with political correctness, particularly the main character. The whole time, the entire class was cracking up, and the girl behind me was almost in hysterics. We also had a cultural sensitivity class in my sociology class (admittedly, most of the course was about cultural sensitivity, and this was pretty much just a day on racial sensitivity), we watched Bon Qui Qui, and some SNL or SNL-like skit where this Black guy puts on makeup to look like a white guy, and he has a bunch of ridiculous experiences, like when he walks into a store, and the white owner tells him that he can just take the newspaper without paying for it, or when he rides a bus and the only other Black guy on the bus leaves, the bus goes into party mode, and the women and the drinks come out.

I'm not sure that entertainment and the propogation of racial and gender-driven media are among the intentions of cultural sensitivity classes, but I'm not complaining. Just an interesting observation.
